The most beautiful Christmas gifts in the pandemic-Thanksgiving Letters from students and parents in free one on one academic tutoring program for youth in disadvantage families initiated by The Salvation Army OCCCC and UCAA YES team

Captain Esther Hsu, Alexis Li

November 26, 2020,Thanksgiving Day, Letters of thanks flew to the volunteer teachers from California, New York, Michigan and many other states in the United States. This fall, when the global Covid-19 plague is raging, people are isolated at home, schools are closed or online classes are switched, and the quality of education has been severely hit. The UCAA YES (Youth, Education, Service) youth team, and The Salvation Army Oakland Chinatown Corps and Community Center jointly initiated a community volunteer program to provide one-to-one free online academic tutoring for youth with study difficulty in disadvantage families. Volunteer teachers and administrative staff come from 9 states including Arizona, California, and Canada. All volunteer teachers are selected through interviews, with excellent academic performance and good character. Most volunteer teachers are High school students, some are middle school students, College students and adult professionals. Teachers mainly tutor English, mathematics and other subjects. About 60 hours of one-to-one courses are offered from Monday to Friday every week. At the same time, the Salvation Army also carried out one-on-one parent-child education and guidance for parents. On Thanksgiving Day, students and parents sent good news about their academic progress. Volunteer teachers' caring, enthusiastic, and hard-working produced sweet fruits.

There is a middle school rising student who grew up in a single mother family. Lagging behind in school, she were required school repeat. Learning from the free one on one tutoring program, the student keep up with her academic progress and reach the upgrade standard. But because of lack of self-confidence, she almost never ask or answer questions in class. Parents even started looking for doctors for help. In the two sessions of tutoring, the teachers give her caring, gentle, patient and meticulous guidance. Now the student's mother said’ My daughter can speak boldly in the school now, I am so happy and grateful’.

There is also a high school student who has immigrated to the United States for many years. Because his English has not been able to keep up with the normal classroom progress, and he stayed in ELD program for many years. The school plans to enroll students in learning disability classes, but the mother thinks that the children should have no intellectual problems and insist on not letting the children go to learning disability classes, but she worried about him and could not figure out what went wrong in school. Having Joined in free one on one tutoring for two sessions , he have improved significantly. He was able to keep up with homework, and his grade has become upper-middle. This proves that many students’ academic problems are actually not from intellectual issue. It is the large-class teaching environment which can not give students timely help in need. High-income families can help their children timely by hiring private tutor, while children from low-income families cannot afford one-on-one private tutoring, and their academic problems often accumulate. The student’s parents expressed their appreciation and said ”the free one-on-one academic tutoring is really timely.”

In addition, a middle school student and a high school are addicted to video games, and their grades are ranked between C or D. After participating in two one-to-one education sessions, their grades increased to A or B, and one of them was also on the school honor roll and was awarded the Certificate for Academic Excellence.

Putting hard work and repaid by students’ growth. The Salvation Army Oakland Chinatown Corps and Community Center and the UCAA YES team have made great achievements in teaching the youth from disadvantaged families. These thank-you letters from students and parents are the most beautiful Thanksgiving gift the volunteers have received.

Excerpt from thank you letter:

Dear teachers and co-workers, first of all thank you very much for your dedication during this period of time. My children's grades have improved. R has made great progress in mathematics, and he has gone from inferiority to self-confidence. J English from c By the time b, Y has gone from just not understanding to slowly understanding to 80%. These are all your contributions to make such progress. Thank you so much!

I would like to thank all the volunteers of the Salvation Army Ulun Huatown Church Life Tree Education Center and UCAA YES for their hard work!

I am very grateful to the children's volunteers for their selfless dedication and contribution in these two months! You use love to nourish the children's hearts, the little teachers use their rich knowledge to open the children's hearts, and your selfless dedication to nurture the children's hearts!

I sincerely thank you for your dedication and help. In this short period of time, I have seen my daughter K change, her attitude towards learning has improved, and her grades have improved. The most important thing is that K has become very timid and fearful. The attitude of never asking questions and not responding has changed a bit. I saw her start to try to ask the little teacher to help her with homework that she didn't understand! This is really a big improvement for me! Because I haven't participated in this program before! I discussed with K’s doctors and classmates how to help K to ask questions and answer other people’s questions!

K has seen your hard work in progress.

Say to the volunteers again: Thank you for your hard work!

I wish you good health!

Dear teacher: Thank you teachers for your hard work and dedication to D. We just came to the United States and D's English level is very low. Thank you for your selfless help.

Dear teachers: Thank you for teaching my two sons so hard. I am very grateful to you. I occasionally watch my son study. The teachers are also very hardworking. Thank you for your hard work, and taught my two sons a lot of knowledge. Thank you Master, thank the Salvation Army, and thank UCAA YES.

I sincerely thank you! Time flies so fast, the second period of tuition is over again, and I feel very reluctant every time, not only because of being taught, but also because I met these excellent teachers of ceremonies and I didn’t give up, thank my child With their participation in her study, these brothers and sisters will become part of her good memory. I wish you peace, health and happiness!

Thank you sincerely: Thank you for your precious time and patient teaching to my son! At the same time, thanks to all the volunteers in the administration team for their time and effort! thank God! Thank you for having it!

My heartfelt thanks to the teachers and volunteers of the Salvation Army!

When children come to LA-US in January 2020, language is a big obstacle. It’s hard to keep up with work just after the beginning of the year. High school teachers adjusted the 9th grade high school curriculum based on the child’s language level to reduce the difficulty of the curriculum and focus on developing English language. We all communicate in Mandarin at home, and it is not easy for parents to find effective ways to help him.

thank God! The team of teachers and volunteers led by Ms. Xu from the Salvation Army helped the child build confidence through weekly tutoring for more than half a year, and his English language skills have developed and improved. Weak classmates. Your counseling has helped your children lay a better foundation for their future learning and growth.

As parents, we would like to take advantage of the annual Thanksgiving to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Salvation Army Ms. Xu, UCAA YES teacher, and administrative volunteers! May God commemorate each and every love you give! May God bless!

Sincerely, thank you very much! All the teachers and staff, my daughter's latest math results. B+

A great degree of progress, thanks to all the teachers and staff for their hard work.

I am very grateful to the teacher for helping to educate my child, he also learned a lot of knowledge. Thank God for giving this opportunity so that my child can accept knowledge that he does not understand.

Thank you all the administrative staff behind the scenes for supervising my daughter's class. Maybe my daughter is a bit annoying for you many times. Thank you all for your patience, and thank you for coming here to help with your studies during the epidemic. Teachers and colleagues are fortunate, thank you

In this grateful holiday, I would like to thank all the staff of the Life Tree Education Center. It is you who took your precious time to help my child with homework. Thank you also for giving us such a good opportunity. During the tuition, the teacher and the administrative team also helped us answer and solve some small problems in a timely manner. Thanks to my son's math teacher for keeping him among the best in math. Taught him a lot of ways to do problems. Thanks to the English teacher for helping him in grammar and improving his writing. Thank you very much for your help so that he won the highest honor award in school. Make him very happy. Thank you again. Thank you.
